Good Chiropractor: How to Choose Wisely

A good chiropractor can be checked on before any appointment is made. Three questions establish the training: where the practitioner qualified, how long the program ran, and whether they are registered to practice locally. Qualifications vary considerably between countries, and a Doctor of Chiropractic is a professional doctoral degree while many chiropractic qualifications are undergraduate.

The rest is judged at the first visit. An examination should precede any treatment. The structure believed to be involved, and why it accounts for the symptoms, should be stated. Something to do between visits should be given, and a review point set at which the plan is reassessed. An open-ended schedule with no end point and no review is the arrangement to be careful about.

Nine Things to Check

The checks below apply to any chiropractor, including ours. The first three can be done before you book; the rest are judged at the first visit.

  1. Where they qualified and how long the program ran.
  2. Whether they are registered to practice in Malaysia.
  3. Whether they work with physiotherapists or other providers.
  4. Whether they take a full history before examining you.
  5. Whether an examination comes before any treatment.
  6. Whether the findings are explained in plain language.
  7. Whether imaging is ordered only when it would change the plan.
  8. Whether you are given something to do between visits.
  9. Whether a review point is set, with a plan that has an end point.

Before You Book: Training, Registration and Teamwork

1. Training

Ask where the chiropractor qualified and how long the program was. A Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) is a postgraduate professional degree, typically four years of full-time study after an undergraduate degree; other chiropractic qualifications vary in length and content between countries.

2. Registration

Chiropractors in Malaysia practice under the Traditional and Complementary Medicine Act 2016, and you can ask whether a practitioner is registered. Registration is a basic requirement rather than a mark of quality, but its absence is a reason to look elsewhere.

3. Teamwork

Many spine and joint problems involve muscles, tendons and ligaments as well as joints. A chiropractor who works alongside physiotherapists, and who refers to a medical doctor when the findings call for it, can plan for all of these rather than relying on one method.

4. A full history

A good chiropractor asks where the pain is, how it started, what makes it better or worse, and about your general health, medications and previous care, and records the answers.

5. Examination before treatment

Range of motion, muscle and orthopedic tests, and a neurological screen where relevant should come before any treatment. For neck pain or lower back pain with symptoms into an arm or leg, the nerve examination is particularly important.

6. A clear explanation

You should be told which structure is believed to be involved and why it accounts for your symptoms, what is still uncertain, and what the proposed chiropractic treatment involves, including alternatives and the option to decline any technique. Vague labels without an explanation of what caused them are less useful.

7. Imaging only when it changes the plan

X-rays and MRI are useful when the findings suggest a problem that imaging would clarify, such as persistent nerve symptoms, significant injury or findings that do not fit. A good chiropractor explains why a scan is or is not needed, and reads existing images alongside the examination rather than in isolation.

8. Something to do between visits

Advice and exercise belong alongside any hands-on care. A visit should end with specific exercises or changes to daily habits, not only a follow-up appointment.

9. A review point and an end point

The plan should include when progress will be reviewed and what will happen if it is not improving. An open-ended schedule with no review is the arrangement to be careful about.

How Chiropractic Care Works With Physiotherapy

A chiropractic adjustment addresses joint movement, but many problems also involve soft tissue and strength. At our chiropractic center in Kuala Lumpur, chiropractic care is combined with physiotherapy, exercise and, where indicated, therapy equipment, so the plan covers the joint, the surrounding tissues and the loading behind the problem. CSC has provided this combined care since 2006.

If You Are Closer to Bandar Sri Damansara

Northwest Kuala Lumpur is served by a second center. You can read about our Bandar Sri Damansara center. That center provides chiropractic together with physiotherapy.

The address, telephone number and opening hours are listed on contact details for Bandar Sri Damansara. Travel details for the main center are on contact details for the Kuala Lumpur headquarters.

The chiropractic price list in Kuala Lumpur and physiotherapy fees in Kuala Lumpur pages list every fee before care begins.

Choosing care for a child adds its own questions, and the checklist of questions to ask before chiropractic care for a child sets them out in order, from the diagnosis and the neck procedure to registration and consent.
