Neck and Back Pain: Sorting Out the Causes
Neck and back pain is very common, and it usually comes from everyday strain on the joints, muscles and discs of the spine, such as poor posture, weak or tight muscles and stiff joints. At Chiropractic Specialty Center (CSC) in Kuala Lumpur, the first step is a careful check to sort out which of these is driving the pain.
Because back pain often has more than one cause, experts say care should join several methods rather than rely on one (Knezevic 2021). That is why CSC plans chiropractic, physiotherapy and exercise rehab together.

Key Points to Know
- A good check looks at posture, how far the spine moves, and how you move during daily tasks.
- The basics for long-term back pain are staying active, avoiding bed rest and making exercise part of care.
- Exercise probably eases long-term low back pain more than no treatment or usual care (Hayden 2021).
- Machines and hands-on care are used alongside active exercise, not in place of it.
What Causes Neck and Back Pain
Common causes include:
- Sitting for long hours, often slouched over a desk or phone
- Weak or tight muscles around the spine and hips
- Stiff spinal joints
- Repeated bending, lifting or twisting
- Disc wear, bulges or herniations
- Past injuries that were never fully rehabbed
Pain that keeps coming back, does not settle, or travels into an arm or leg is worth having checked by a qualified provider.
How the Check Works
At CSC, the check includes a talk about your symptoms and daily routine, a posture review, tests of how far the neck and back move, and a look at how you bend, lift and sit. If pain travels into an arm or leg, a nerve check is added. Any scans you bring are looked at too. The findings are explained before any care starts.

How CSC Treats Neck and Back Pain
CSC’s chiropractors and physiotherapists work together on one plan. It may include:
- Gentle, non-rotatory chiropractic to help stiff joints move
- Physiotherapy and exercise rehab to build strength and control
- Posture and work-setup advice
- Machines chosen for the problem, such as the RxDecom® decompression system, the FD-3000™, laser therapy and shockwave therapy
Machines are used to ease the load on an irritated area enough for rehab to move forward. The full list of treatment equipment is on its own page.
What the Research Says
Across 26 trials in acute low back pain, spinal manipulation brought modest improvements in pain and function for up to six weeks (Paige 2017), and for long-term low back pain, exercise probably eases pain more than no treatment or usual care (Hayden 2021). A review of neck pain care also lists exercise and manual therapy among the non-surgical options (Cohen 2017).
Surgery has a place, but for most neck and back pain it is not the first step. It makes sense to understand the non-surgical options, and to get a second opinion, before choosing an operation. Read more about spine surgery and when it may be needed.
