How Large Is the Chiropractic Profession Today

The chiropractic profession is established in many countries, but education, degree titles and regulation differ by jurisdiction. In the United States, programs accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education lead to the Doctor of Chiropractic degree and include at least 4,200 instructional hours covering basic sciences, clinical assessment, diagnostic imaging, chiropractic methods, rehabilitation and patient management.

Malaysia regulates chiropractic through its own framework, so international qualifications should not be treated as interchangeable simply because they share the same profession. For readers comparing practitioners, useful checks include where the person trained, the qualification awarded, current Malaysian registration requirements, and whether the clinician can explain examination findings, consent, technique choice and referral limits. Those details say more than a broad claim about the size of the profession.

Learn what do chiropractors provide care and how large is the profession in Malaysia before you visit one today.

Over the years, many have asked us: How large is the chiropractic profession? Chiropractic is often described as one of the faster-growing primary health care professions, and by practitioner numbers it ranks among the largest. According to the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards, there are over 100,000 doctors of chiropractic (DCs) in active practice in the world today. More than 10,000 students are in chiropractic educational programs accredited by a federally recognized body (CCE). The ratio of chiropractors to the general population, based on the Bureau of the Census figures, is one doctor of chiropractic for every 5,100 citizens. Comparatively speaking, there are well over ten times more MDs than DCs. Thus, the MD to general population ratio is approximately one to every 430 citizens in North America.

Key Takeaways: What You Need to Know

  1. Rapid Growth: An expanding number of registered chiropractors and clinics across Malaysia.
  2. Integrative Care: Chiropractic working alongside physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
  3. Non-Invasive Focus: Emphasis on safe, gentle spinal methods without injections or surgery.

What Do Chiropractors Care for?

Chiropractors manage a wide variety of spine and joint disorders. The chiropractors of Chiropractic Specialty Center focus on care for the spine, joints, sports injuries, slipped disc (slip-disc), and scoliosis. In addition to chiropractic, we provide clinical physiotherapy. We combine physiotherapy and chiropractic so that one assessment covers both disciplines. It is not just the collaborative means of care that set us apart from others, but rather our research-based clinical methods and the clinical technology we use for neck and back care. In short, our doctors of chiropractic work alongside registered physiotherapists, with equipment that is not widely available in Malaysia, so a plan can combine hands-on care with graded loading under one roof. If a previous course of care has not helped, we will start by asking what was tried, at what dose, and for how long. We have successfully cared for thousands of spine and joint patients. We are confident that we can provide the same for you.

Chiropractic Care In Malaysia

For the Malaysian market, we don't know how large the profession is. However, we do know that it is rapidly expanding. There are many more new chiropractors today than ever before in Malaysia. Most are holding chiropractic degrees from IMU. The number of chiropractors is far below the current market needs. This will soon change, as there are universities in Malaysia that are implementing chiropractic degree programs. Chiropractic Specialty Center has a mixture of American-educated chiropractors, Australian-educated chiropractors, and, of course, locally trained chiropractors. Regardless of whom you get your chiropractic care from, you will be getting care from a trained chiropractor. Our chiropractors work with clinical physiotherapists in KL, and as such, they give comprehensive care. In other words, you get better faster. The most important aspect of spine and joint care is getting comprehensive care (holistic). Care that looks at the whole picture, rather than at the sore area alone, tends to hold better over time. Finding out what is driving a symptom through a thorough assessment is what makes a durable plan possible, and it is worth asking any provider to explain their reasoning before care begins.

At present, we have five teams of chiropractors and physiotherapists serving the Klang Valley from five different locations.

Each center is backed by a clinical team of physiotherapists and technologically superior physiotherapy and chiropractic modalities. The combined efforts and knowledge of our chiropractors, physiotherapists, and technicians are the backbone of our system. Thus, the coupling of clinical equipment with collaborative chiropractic and physiotherapy care enables us to offer you the type of care you deserve to get. If you have pain, we can help. We are a well-equipped and most collaborative team of experts with the patient's needs on our minds at all times.

What the Qualifications Actually Mean

Titles in this field are confusing, and the confusion is not accidental. Here is what to look for.

  • D.C. means Doctor of Chiropractic, a full chiropractic degree program. It is not the same as a bachelor of science with chiropractic modules, and the difference is years of training.
  • In Malaysia, chiropractic practice is registered under the Ministry of Health as traditional and complementary medicine. Ask any practitioner directly whether they hold that registration, and ask where they qualified. A practitioner who is reluctant to answer either question has told you something.
  • A chiropractor is not a medical doctor, does not prescribe, and does not operate. Any clinic that blurs that line is not being straight with you.
  • Ask who else is on the team. Physiotherapy is a separate profession with its own registration. A center offering both should be able to name the individuals and their qualifications.

What the Evidence Supports, and Where It Does Not

The size of a profession says nothing about what it can do for you. The research does.

  • Low back pain: spinal manipulative therapy produced small, short-term improvements in pain and function for chronic low back pain, similar to other recommended treatments (Rubinstein SM, de Zoete A, van Middelkoop M, et al. BMJ. 2019;364:l689).
  • Neck pain: manipulation and mobilization produced similar changes in pain, function and patient satisfaction (Gross A, Langevin P, Burnie SJ, et al. Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2015;(9):CD004249).
  • What it does not do: chiropractic care is not a treatment for conditions outside the musculoskeletal system, and claims in that direction are not supported.
