What Happens When You Neglect Your Jaw Pain?

If you do not get the appropriate TMJ treatment, you could start to experience inflammation: increasing joint damage along with further breakdown and wear of your jaw joint.

Continued inflammatory processes near your jaw joint can increase muscle contraction, resulting in increased facial, neck, and head pain. A jaw disorder may even cause nausea, vertigo, headaches, and ringing in your ears. To avoid such complications, seek care from our TMJ specialist today!

What Are The Common Jaw & TMJ Symptoms?

The jaw joint is the only joint in the body that does not have a pain-sensing nerve. In other words, when you jaw malfunction, you may not experience physical pain at the jaw. If you have jaw pain, the pain is related to muscles surrounding the jaw and not the jaw joint.

Our TMJ specialist has divided the common signs and symptoms of jaw pain and TMD separately; let us begin with signs of a jaw disorder:

  • A feeling of unsteadiness or loss of balance
  • Swimming or floating sensation
  • Vertigo (spinning sensation)
  • Light-headedness
  • Faintness
  • Dizziness

Now that we have converged some of the signs, let take a look at what our TMJ specialist reports on symptoms one can experience with Jaw pain:

  • Headaches: At times, they can be so severe to the point of being a migraine.
  • Symptoms of ear pain: Hearing loss, ringing in ears, ear pain, plugged ear, feeling like you are underwater.
  • Clicking: In the jaw joint, a disc or pad ideally sits between the mandible and temporal bone inside the TM Joint. The jaw disc (cushion) can sometimes slip out of place and cause a clicking sound when closing or opening. This clicking may lead to crepitus or locking and grating.
  • Locking: Whenever a jaw disc gets chronically displaced, it doesn’t click back into place always. That leads to the jaw joint locking, limiting the range of motion, and causes deflection of the jaw.
  • Popping: Some clicking might, by nature, be popping or staccato.
  • Jaw Pain: There are many sources that it can originate from, but the most common thing that causes jaw pain is the jaw joint’s disc, jaw joints, ligaments, and muscles in your jaws as your upper neck and skull.

I’ve been diagnosed with TMJ. May I know the price for each session?

  2. Jamilah

Hello, I have not been diagnosed with jaw issues as I don’t know where to go to get my TMJ checked out. Every morning I wake up, I have to unlock my jaw. I think I clench my teeth during sleep. But whenever I open my mouth or eat, my jaw pops. On one occasion, while eating, I heard a church, and suddenly my jaw became painful, and they locked up. It is frustrating to be in pain. Would you please tell me if this is serious? Also, will you be able to help diagnose the issue and treat it?

    1. Dr. Yama Zafer, D.C.

      Dear Jamilah,

Please forgive us for not replying to your posted question earlier. Also, please accept our appreciation for posting your question. Jaw problems are common, and the majority of patients that develop them do so because they grind their teeth at night (bruxism). The good news is that jaw issues are treatable and recoverable. You will need focused therapy and treatment options that repair the root causes to recover. Clicking jaws, inability to fully open the jaws, facial and jaw pain are common signs of temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD or jaw problems). Patients with chronic jaw issues may also suffer from upper neck issues, headaches, dizziness, tinnitus (ringing or a sensation of fullness in the ears).

We have treated many with jaw issues successfully. The first step is to assess your jaw and neck as they often occur together. I encourage you to call our main center on 03 2093 1000 to schedule an appointment for a thorough assessment of your jaw issues. Once we have assessed you, we will be able to give you better information as to self-help tips and treatment options.

      I hope this helped.

        Hi Dr

Do you treat locked jaws in the elderly? My mom is 80yrs and often gets a locked jaw joint; please advise us on what we need to do for her.

        1. Dr. Yama Zafer, D.C.

          Dear Mr. Kuldip,

We treated locked jaws in all patients regardless of their age. I encourage you to schedule your mother for a thorough assessment. Once we have evaluated her condition, we will customize a plan of treatment that combines physiotherapy with chiropractic. The merging of physiotherapy with chiropractic provides the most comprehensive therapy program. Treatments are painless and highly effective. Your mother may also present with tinnitus ()ringing in the ears), headaches, and vertigo, as these are common conditions that result from a problematic jaw joint. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with us on 03 2093 1000 for more information about our treatments and centers.
