What Is Tech Neck Or Text Neck?

Text neck and tech neck are the same conditions that result from excessive use of mobile phones, tablets, and computers with poor posture. Using your phone or laptop with the head and neck in a downward flexed position places exorbitant amounts of stress on your neck bones, spinal discs, and spinal nerves.

Tech neck is the leading cause of cervical spondylosis

The cumulative impact of the stress placed leads to degenerative changes (cervical spondylosis) and damage to nerves, joints, muscles, and ligaments. Continued unabated stress induced through tech neck or text neck will result in irreparable damage to joints (arthritis, bone spurs & cervical spondylosis), nerve pain, and tissues of the neck, upper back, shoulders, and arms.

The original term was text neck, and in recent days people are also calling it tech neck. Regardless of the term used, tech and text neck is the leading cause of neck pain, headaches, migraines, tinnitus, dizziness, vertigo, jaw pain, shoulder, arm pain today!  This article covers text neck or tech neck dos, don’ts, treatment, and cures.

Why Is Tech Neck & Text Neck Bad For You?

Text neck first described text neck in 2015; it was linked to excessive texting and prolonged cell phone use. However, things have changed a lot since 2015. Nowadays, people are talking more about tech neck. While both tech neck and text neck are descriptive of identical issues, Tech neck was meant to bring attention to poor postures commonly seen in people on desktops, laptops, mobile phones, or tablets.

The tucked-in head and neck postures we engage during computer, cell, or tablet use are harming us more than we realize! To help you understand, let us explain what happens when you look down. The human head weighs between 4-6kgs on average. For simplicity, we will base the weight of the head at 5kg.

In an upright posture, the head’s weight (5kgs) is transferred down through the seven neck bones onto the upper back. However, if the head is flexed by 1 inch (25mm), the head’s weight doubles as it travels down the neck. So, a 5kg head becomes 10kgs when you lean your neck forward by one inch. The typical mobile phone and tablet neck postures are 3 inches flexed and 2-3 inches on desktops and laptops. Let’s do the math now:

  • The typical 3-inch head flexion while using mobile phones or tablets will make a 5kg head put a 40kg equivalent amount of stress on the neck and upper back (every inch forward doubles the weight).
  • If you use the desktop in a poor posture which most do, you can expect a 2-inch head flexion, making your 5kg head feel like 20kgs.

What makes tex and tech neck bad is the degree of stress it places on your neck joints. Stress causes wear and tear; the more your stress joints, the faster they wear out; leading to bone spurs, arthritis & cervical spondylosis.

We have seen our fair share of twenty-year-olds having the neck of sixty-year-olds! And we like you to change habits so that you can continue to enjoy what you do.

What Are The Dos & Don’ts Of Tech Or Text Neck?

Tech and text neck are making you people feel older than their parents or grandparents. Yes, it can become that nasty. It can lead to severe neck pain, headaches, dizziness, vertigo, jaw pain, weakness, paralysis of hands, arms, and shoulders. To avoid the pitfalls of tech and text neck, we recommend the following:

Top Three Don’ts of Tech & Text Neck

  1. Minimize mobile phone use as much as you can. Avoid watching videos for an extended period of cell phones or tablets.
  2. Limit your laptop and desktop use time. Avoid working continuously for more than 45 minutes at a time.
  3. Don’t use your mobile phone and computer at an angle. Using computer or handheld devices at an angle will rapidly increase the rate of wear and tear.

Top Three Dos For Text Neck & Tech Neck

  1. Do hold your phone up. To minimize the impact of the tech neck, hold your phone at eye level and directly in front.
  2. Dock your laptop so that you can use a monitor. Position the monitor directly in front of you. Make sure the top of the monitor is at your eye level. Measure the eye-level position while sitting at your best posture. The critical part is to have the monitor about 20-24 inches from your face. If the monitor is too far, you will lean forward, causing your head to flex. Make sure to get a good quality monitor, one with retina protection.
  3. Take breaks and rest your neck and upper back. Do not use any electronic device continuously for more than 45-minutes.

More and more young adults suffer from headaches, neck pain, upper back pain, shoulder balde pain, numbness, and tingling in the arms or the hands. Upper back and painful shoulder blades are common with tech neck and text neck conditions. The more stress placed on the neck, the greater the degree of nerve impingement. Nerve impingement is the leading cause of nerve pain. A pinched nerve in the neck can cause pain in the neck, upper back, shoulders, arms, or between the shoulder blades or at the shoulder blade. The question that begs an answer is: Why is this happening?

CSC founder and director Yama Zafer, D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic), has been treating neck and back pain patients for the better part of 20 years. According to him, Text Neck is not new and has been around for centuries. The difference today is that text neck is widespread, affecting millions. According to Yama Zafer, D.C., the origin of text-neck-like symptoms and disorders go as far back as the industrial revolution.

What Is The Link Between Text Neck & Neck Pain?

The industrial revolution was when humanity left their farms for factories and offices. It was then that people started to engage in occupations, which required them to maintain a flexed head and neck posture for extended periods of time. The modern age has left its imprint on us, and as we look back, we can see its impact, especially in the mid-1800s and yet again in the early 1980s when the typewriter and then personal computers keyboards invaded our lives.

office workers of the 1980sIn the mid-1990s, we took a turn for the worse—with the advent of the mighty laptop. Even with all this, our society managed, and we could absorb some of the stresses these devices placed on our bodies. A change came about with the advent of the new age—smartphones and devices. These devices have changed our lives faster than we can accommodate. At the speed of light, they are transforming us and increasing our productivity. But all this comes at a high cost. For some, the cost is too much to bear, leading to disability or worse.

It was not until 2006 when Dr. Fishman, an American Chiropractor, coined the term neck issues resulting from smart devices. He was the first to give a name to what now has researchers throughout the world taking notice of.

The average person, most healthcare practitioners, and even some doctors do not notice proper biomechanics. Posture is overlooked by most people, but not mothers. Yes, mom was right. We need to stop slouching and must sit upright or else.

kidson mobile phones with heads down typical tech neck postureYama Zafer, D.C., related that Text Neck is the next epidemic. A slipped disc is already too common, but in the coming years, it will become the number one health issue for those under the age of 10. That is scary!!!

The best thing to remember is that Text Neck is sending you a message… You must heed the warning or prepare for a painful existence. Thus, the text neck is not to be taken lightly or to LOL about!

Now here is a piece of advice that everyone can use from our Doctors of Chiropractic at Chiropractic Specialty Center®: if you like to text, lift your phone to eye-level and text. Don’t slouch and lean over to text on your phone. Text neck sure is possible only if you can manage to avoid stressing your neck. Start by having the phone come to you by bringing it up to an eye level. Use the voice dictation function. After all, you are more important than the phone. Think of who should go to whom. You are the boss, you decide!
